Why ShopBack Is The Ultimate Taobao Singles’ Day Hack

Our favourite time of the year is fast approaching! And no, we’re not talking about Christmas. We’re talking 11.11 SINGLES’ DAY. With less than a month to go, it’s time to get into battle mode and arm yourself for the biggest shopping event on the planet.

While credit card rebates are the most obvious way of saving on your purchases, there’s another little used hack that you need to add to your arsenal: 3rd party cashback services.

This Singles’ Day, ShopBack.sg is offering up to 22% cashback on your Taobao loot! That’s a pretty insane discount considering the obscenely low prices one can expect from Singles’ Day. And that’s on top of

  • up to 88% off your orders
  • up to 50% off direct shipping costs from Taobao and Tmall to Singapore

You receive up to 33% in cashback too, if you pay with a Visa card.

The best part? You do not need a special cashback credit card to rake in all these benefits, and most importantly, it doesn’t limit you to shopping from a fixed range of shops.

All you need is an account with ShopBack to reap in all the rewards, regardless of which credit card you choose to shop with. The account comes completely free of charge too.

Free money? Bring it on!

What is this sorcery?! – you say. No tricks involved: ShopBack is rewarded by its merchants (like Taobao) for attracting customers. And the rewards are shared with you in the form of cashback. Pretty simple eh?

For Taobao, every item has a different commission and ShopBack gives almost all its earnings back to you hence it’s “up to 22%” on 11 Nov, depending on your luck!

Outside of Singles’ Day, this savings hack is still one to be reckoned with – expect to rake in up to 10% cashback on your Taobao purchases on normal days.

Intrigued? Here’s a simple overview on how to get started.

Step 1: Setup your account

Complete your account by filling in your personal information and choosing your preferred payment method; you get the choice of receiving your cashback via Bank Transfer or PayPal. See below.

Step 2: Find out if your item qualifies for cashback
There is only one additional step that you’ll have to go through to start raking in rewards.

Instead of making your purchases directly on TaoBao’s official website, you’ll have to search for the item that you want on ShopBack’s dedicated search platform for TaoBao.

Here’s an easy step-by-step:

  1. Visit ShopBack’s home page.
  2. Search for TaoBao on their list of merchants, and click on it. See below.

4. Use this search engine to find out if the item you want to purchase qualifies for cashback, by entering the product name from Taobao. This step also ensures that ShopBack tracks your order. See below.

Example: You saw this gorgeous marble platter from our article 10 Accessories From Taobao Guaranteed To Satisfy Your Marble Addiction.

You copy the product name (not the product URL) “欧式创意陶瓷大理石纹西餐牛排盘子菜盘酒店家用餐具个性瓷器套装”…

…and enter it into ShopBack’s dedicated search bar.
Hit the “Shop Now” button to see if the product qualifies for cashback.

5There are only 2 possible scenarios from here on.

Scenario 1: Your item qualifies for cashback.
Lucky you! The item you want qualifies for cashback.

You get directed to a page with a list of eligible sellers offering the product that looks something like this:

6You can now proceed to pick the merchant you want to purchase from.

Tip: to ensure your merchant qualifies for cashback, your page URL should begin with ai.taobao.com

Scenario 2: Your item doesn’t qualify for cashback.
After entering the product name in the search bar, you get no results

Unfortunately, this means that ShopBack’s cashback service isn’t available for that particular item. A random search of the items featured in our articles show, however, that this doesn’t happen all that often. So unless you’re shopping for something pretty rare and esoteric, you’re pretty likely to find it.

Step 3: Making your purchase and earning some sweet cashback!
So you managed to find your product on ShopBack.
Hit the product link of the merchant you want to purchase from.
You’ll be redirected to a regular TaoBao webpage, that doesn’t carry ai.taobao at the front of its URL. See below.

7

This is normal. Your cashback is still being tracked by ShopBack.
IMPORTANT: you’ll have to check out your items within 7 days in order to qualify for cashback.

Step 4: Keeping tabs on your cashback!
Your cashback history can be viewed on your profile from www.ShopBack.sg, under the tab “My Cashback”.

It’ll look something like this:8

The dashboard gives you an overview of the status your transactions, whether they are:

  1. Pending
  2. Redeemable
  3. Bonus (if there is a bonus)
  4. Payout (if you have racked up enough to qualify for a pay out)
  5. Total Earnings

Cashback is only redeemable 100 days from when your Taobao order was processed. Validation by the merchant takes place during this period – in which they verify that your order was not cancelled, returned or exchanged.

Your cashback then becomes redeemable once you have accumulated $10 in cashback.

The fine print

63906622.jpg
Some nitty gritty you’ll need to know while using the service:

  1. Cashback varies from 0.1% to 10% depending on the seller
  2. Cashback is only awarded after delivery has been confirmed within 90 days
  3. Cashback does not apply to
    • taxes, delivery fees, service fees
    • purchases made through 3rd party agents
    • purchases made through Taobao mobile apps
    • orders that have been returned, exchanged or cancelled.

The BIG question: Is ShopBack for me?
Technically, this IS free money because since you’re going to shop on TaoBao, it really doesn’t hurt to earn a little extra cash on the side!

There is of course the requirement of signing up for an account (albeit FREE!) and also having to verify if the items you want qualify for cashback.

However, the nice bit about ShopBack is that TaoBao is really just one of the many merchants under their stable. You can earn cashback from over 500 stores including asos, Groupon, Uber, ZALORA, Macy’s, Sephora, Reebonz, Cathay Cineplex, Expedia, Cotton On, and Singtel.

That aside, here’s the BIGGEST reason why we think you should be setting up your ShopBack account pronto…
